        • Side Cut Metropark, River Road between Jerome and Wayne roads, Maumee; Park Office, 419-893-2789Side Cut, the first Metropark, takes its name from the former Side Cut of the canal constructed in the 1840s to connect the main branch of the canal with the Maumee River. Three of the original great limestone locks and portions of a fourth are preserved in the park. Also in the park is the monument to the 1794 Battle of Fallen Timbers, one of the most important battles in our nation's history. Side Cut is also the main access site for the thousands of fishermen who come from across the country each spring for the annual spring run of walleye. Audubon Islands, a State Nature Preserve in the Maumee River, is also part of Side Cut.

Especially popular with those who enjoy a leisurely stroll and open views of the river. Bend View is a hike-in park accessible only via the Towpath Trail from Farnsworth. The hike is worth it for the dramatic view of a 90 -degree bend in the river at the park's patio overlook. Farnsworth has a boat launch.

Central Ave., between Corey and Reynolds, Toledo; Park Office, 419-535-3050; Visitor Center, 419-535-3058, ext. 101Wildwood is an unusual combination of beautiful natural areas and former estate buildings and grounds. • Pearson Metropark, Lallendorf Road at SR 2, Oregon; Park Office, 419-691-3997; Macomber Lodge reservations, 419-535-3050. Pearson is one of the last remaining stands of the Great Black Swamp, a notorious forest so dense that development of northwest Ohio lagged 100 years behind the rest of the state. Soldiers in the War of 1812 sent home letters describing the swamp as a miserable stretch of water, mud and mosquitoes. Today, the Metropark is a much friendlier place, where purple cress, spring beauties, trillium, wild ginger and wild geranium bloom in spring. The thick woods and proximity to Lake Erie make Pearson a favorite stopover for a wide variety of migrating birds. Buildings, shelters, bridges, ponds and a garden with a waterfall all were built by workers enrolled in Depression-era work programs, such as the Works Progress Administration and Civilian Conservation Corps. Pedalboat rentals are available at Pearson Metropark, Oregon, 12:30 to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday Memorial weekend through September. Fee: $5/half hour for four-passenger boats.
