For Metroparks programs reservations and information, call 419-535-3058, ext. 101. All Metroparks and the Toledo Area and the University/Parks Trail are open daily, 7 a.m. to dark, free of charge.

Side Cut Metropark, River Road between Jerome and Wayne roads, Maumee; Park Office, 419-893-2789Side Cut, the first Metropark, takes its name from the former Side Cut of the canal constructed in the 1840s to connect the main branch of the canal with the Maumee River. Three of the original great limestone locks and portions of a fourth are preserved in the park. Also in the park is the monument to the 1794 Battle of Fallen Timbers, one of the most important battles in our nation's history. Side Cut is also the main access site for the thousands of fishermen who come from across the country each spring for the annual spring run of walleye. Audubon Islands, a State Nature Preserve in the Maumee River, is also part of Side Cut.

Farnsworth & Bend View Metroparks, 8505 US 24, Waterville; Park Office, 419-878-7641A long, narrow belt of attractive parkland that slopes gently from 30-foot bluffs to the banks of the Maumee River. Especially popular with those who enjoy a leisurely stroll and open views of the river. Bend View is a hike-in park accessible only via the Towpath Trail from Farnsworth. The hike is worth it for the dramatic view of a 90 -degree bend in the river at the park's patio overlook. Farnsworth has a boat launch.

Providence Metropark, US 24 at SR 578 across from Grand Rapids; Park Office, 419-832-6004; Canal boat ticket booth, 419-832-6006; Isaac Ludwig Mill, 419-832-8934; General Store, 419-832-7867Travel back in time aboard a mid-1800s, mule-drawn canal boat, passing through an original lock; visit a working 1800s saw and grist mill, shop in the quaint General Store gift shop, or just relax along a scenic wide spot on the Maumee created by a roller dam. Craft demonstrations at the mill and numerous special events are reasons to visit Providence often. The Towpath Trail, left from the original Miami & Erie Canal, connects Providence with Bend View and Farnsworth.

THE PRESERVES

Oak Openings Preserve Metropark, Two miles west of Toledo Express Airport off SR 2, Swanton; Park Office, 419-826-6463.The largest Metropark lies within the Oak Openings sand belt and offers large varieties of plant and animal life including many rare wildflowers. Here you will find Ohio's only "living" or moving sand dunes. For the hiker, there are 27 miles of trails, including one stretching for 17 miles. For the horseman, there are more than 20 miles of horse trails. Oak Openings also has a scout camp. Children 14 and under may fish in Mallard Lake, while adults with fishing licenses are permitted to fish on Evergreen Lake.Oak Opentings Lodge is a beautiful setting for a business meetings or wedding receptions.

Swan Creek Preserve Metropark, Airport Hwy. between Eastgate and Byrne, Toledo (Entrances from both Airport Hwy. and Glendale Ave.); Park Office, 419-382-4664; Yager Center reservations, 419-535-3050Swan Creek is a wild place in an urban setting. The creek has created steep slopes and embankments along its meandering course, affording visitors beautiful views of the lush floodplain. Spring brings an impressive show of wildflowers.

Wildwood Preserve Metropark, W. Central Ave., between Corey and Reynolds, Toledo; Park Office, 419-535-3050; Visitor Center, 419-535-3058, ext. 101Wildwood is an unusual combination of beautiful natural areas and former estate buildings and grounds. One of the best tallgrass prairies in Ohio is preserved here. Streams have cut deep ravines through the hardwood forest on their way to the Ottawa River. Wildwood has a connector to the University/Parks Trail. The former estate home, now called the Manor House, is a gracious Georgian Colonial residence. The House is open for public tours Wednesday through Sunday, noon to 5 p.m. Park District Headquarters are located here. Recent additions to Wildwood include a boardwalk and covered bridge connecting the main unit of the park with a new area at W. Central Avenue and Corey Road. The addition includes a 100-year-old schoolhouse, a trail connecting the regional bikeway on Corey Road with the Wildwood All-Purpose Trail and connector to the University/Parks Trail, and the Metroparks premier reservable facility, the Jean T. Ward Pavilion.

Pearson Metropark, Lallendorf Road at SR 2, Oregon; Park Office, 419-691-3997; Macomber Lodge reservations, 419-535-3050. Pearson is one of the last remaining stands of the Great Black Swamp, a notorious forest so dense that development of northwest Ohio lagged 100 years behind the rest of the state. Soldiers in the War of 1812 sent home letters describing the swamp as a miserable stretch of water, mud and mosquitoes. Today, the Metropark is a much friendlier place, where purple cress, spring beauties, trillium, wild ginger and wild geranium bloom in spring. The thick woods and proximity to Lake Erie make Pearson a favorite stopover for a wide variety of migrating birds. Buildings, shelters, bridges, ponds and a garden with a waterfall all were built by workers enrolled in Depression-era work programs, such as the Works Progress Administration and Civilian Conservation Corps. Pedalboat rentals are available at Pearson Metropark, Oregon, 12:30 to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday Memorial weekend through September. Fee: $5/half hour for four-passenger boats.

Secor Metropark W. Central Ave. six miles west of US 23/I-475, Berkey; Park Office, 419-829-2761;

Secor Room reservations, 419-535-3050. Located on the edge of the Oak Openings sand belt, Secor has plant and animal life typical of both heavy clay and light sandy soils. There is a tallgrass prairie and more than 400 acres of woodland and meadow. Secor also has a Window on Wildlife.Blue Creek Conservation AreaCorner Neapolis-Waterville and Schadel Roads, Waterville Township.
